WASHINGTON — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new medication for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension in July after receiving approval from the European Medicines Agency.
The drug, Cialis, is a combination of two medications, tadalafil (the generic version of Cialis) and sildenafil (the brand name for Viagra), which are similar to the older medication. Cialis is the only treatment approved for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension, the agency said.
The new drug also includes an option for pulmonary arterial hypertension, the agency said.
“This new drug is a new, new approach to managing patients with erectile dysfunction,” said FDA official Dr. Steven Nissen. “It has a new mechanism for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.”
The FDA issued a warning letter in October, saying the drug is not approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The drug is also not effective for erectile dysfunction, according to the FDA. Cialis and tadalafil have not been approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The FDA said the warning letter is based on studies that show that the new drug does not significantly improve erectile function in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“The FDA is committed to protecting patients from these dangerous side effects,” the FDA said in a statement.
Drug approval is expected next year, and the FDA will be conducting additional studies to determine the safety and efficacy of the drug.
The agency also is working on other medications that have been studied for erectile dysfunction, including sildenafil and tadalafil, the FDA said.
“The FDA is committed to ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment when using this medication, and in the best possible way,” the agency said.
A spokesman for Pfizer Inc., the maker of Cialis, declined to comment.
